Placement Process
Before enrolment, all applicants to WIE's NZCEL programmes must complete a placement assessment to determine the most appropriate starting level. This ensures you begin at the level that matches your current English ability and learning goals.
Placement Assessment Components
Assesses your reading comprehension and grammar knowledge through a series of questions.
A short conversation with a WIE teacher to assess your speaking ability and communication skills.
Based on your results, WIE will recommend the most appropriate NZCEL level for you to start at.
Important: The placement assessment is not a pass/fail test. It is a diagnostic tool to help determine the most appropriate starting level for your individual needs and goals.
How You Are Assessed
NZCEL assessment covers the four core language skills: listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Each skill is assessed through unit standards specific to the level.
Quality Assurance & Moderation
WIE's assessment processes are subject to regular quality assurance checks:
- ✓Internal Moderation: WIE conducts regular internal moderation to ensure assessment consistency across classes and teachers.
- ✓External Moderation: NZQA appoints external moderators to review WIE's assessment processes annually.
- ✓Consistency Reviews: WIE regularly undergoes NZQA Consistency Reviews to ensure national standards are met.
